user led mental health advocacy

What is Advocacy?

“Advocacy is taking action to help people say what they want, secure their rights, represent their interests and obtain services they need. Advocates and advocacy schemes work in partnership with the people they support and take their side. Advocacy promotes social inclusion, equality and social justice.”
(Action for Advocacy,2007)

One to One Advocacy is issue based and resolution focussed and can vary from what people would refer to as crisis / short term through to less formal and more support based citizens advocacy. Often this advocacy is specialised to particular service user groups - for us the specialism is mental health and we are user led - however all advocacy should be user led in its approach.
